Understanding Houston Rhinoplasty And What The Treatment Involves

By Debra Bennett

There are various people who might not be happy with size or shape of their noses. The nose is a critical organ when it comes to balancing the facial structure. It is for that reason that many people look to go for surgery in order to find a harmonious alignment of different features. For residents of Houston rhinoplasty procedure is one that is complex and which patients need to be conversant with.

While the surgery is a complicated one, there is limitation to the extent of alteration. The results are dependent on nose size, age of a patient and condition of the skin. There should be clear communication with your surgeon as regards expectations and what the treatment will involve. The surgery does not solve emotional or social problems.

There are a number of reasons why people consider the procedure. One of the main reasons patients consider the surgery is for cosmetic purposes. People may want to change the tip of the nose because it is too wide, lacking in definition or round. You can also go for the procedure for medical reasons. That is in case there is injury to the nose, in which case the nose might be bent forward or broken. People with breathing problems will also benefit from the treatment.

The procedure can be done by making incisions in the nostrils. That is the case with closed rhinoplasty. The other option is open rhinoplasty in which a small incision will be made on the nose before the nose gets elevated. The procedure that is used will depend on nose area which is supposed to be treated. The surgery can be covered by the NHS, which is only the case when it is done as reconstructive surgery to improve breathing in a patient.

The surgical procedure generally lasts 2 hours. The exact time will depend on procedure that is used. After the procedure is completed, you will be required to stay in hospital for a day or two. Also, you will need to stay off work for a fortnight before you can start with light duties. If there is any exercising to be done, it needs to be light.

Most closed rhinoplasty operations will take two weeks or so to start healing. You should not expect any scarring but in case the nose was broken as part of surgery, there will be some noticeable bruising around eyes for 10 days or so. Common effects experienced after surgery are memory lapses, slow reaction time and impaired judgment. It will be advisable to have someone stay with you for a few days after surgery.

As regards the results, even slight changes to the structure of the nose can make a huge difference on the way the way the nose looks. In some cases however, the slight changes might not be enough and the surgeon might decide to do a second procedure to improve on the changes.

Just like happens with other surgeries, there are some possible risks and complications. The risks include adverse reaction to anesthesia, bleeding and infection. There are some people that experience permanent numbness. The numbness is around the nose and might make it hard to breathe.
